My doubt is, Should both the conditions be satisfied to file under Qualifying widow(er) or can each condition stand alone

COnditions

1. Two yrs after spouse's death

2. Principal residence for dependent child

A dependent child can also be claimed in Head of House hold... but what makes Qualifying Widow(er) special to file in that status

For 1st year after death of spouse one can file MFJ return. After that "can opt" to file QW for 2nd & 3rd year, only if he/she has qualifying child who stays with TP for whole year and TP bears > 50% of expenses.

It is more beneficial to file as QW rather than HOH as deduction, credits and tax brackets for QW is same for MFJ  and better then HOH.

Correct me if I am wrong. :)

Hi

okay for the year of death the living spouse can claim MFJ then afterwards can do either MFJ or QW. It is advantageous to do QW over HOH because

AGI reduction thresholds are higher for QW. For QW and MFJ the AGI threshold level is 300,000. For HOH the threshold amount is 275000.

So if you in the higher income levels that would be beneficial to be a QW.

also and foremost the Std deduction amounts for a HOH is 8950 for a QW it is 12200 same as a MFJ. I got this off the irs.gov website.

if you itemize then it would be of no benefit or if you make less than 275000.

hope this helps any corrections are always welcome as well :)) thanks !!!
